Ieva Viese (b. 1987) is an interdisciplinary author working with sculpture, poetry, and audiovisual arts. With a background in culture studies and film criticism, her artistic practice explores the relationships between words and images, text and adaptation, medium and message.
She graduated from the program Movement. Image. Sound at the Art Academy of Latvia in 2023 with the thesis installation In Saecula Saeculorum, and from the interdisciplinary program POST in 2025 with The Gaze Dissolves and Returns as Form. Her work investigates the fundamental principles of movement, form, and repetition, and their resonance with human presence and emotion.
The alien beings emerging in stoneware forms, cast iron, and porcelain from the series The Presence of The Visitors draw on creatures that appeared on this planet over 500 million years ago and persist today as fossils. To the contemporary human eye, these ancient inhabitants resemble extraterrestrial visitors – yet from a perspective of a deeper time, we ourselves are aliens, standing only in the antechamber of world history. This work has been exhibited and received critical mention in a published review.
