Fool’s Spring
James Canty
09/05 - 01/06 2024
The works of the exhibition examine the artist's interest in perceiving the world around us - the phenomenological interactions between object, subject and environment. There is an endless choice of variations and strategies between the placement of shape, line, color and material in the space. By developing a restorative practice where each work and medium speaks to and is born of each other, James Canty has arrived at the beginning of all cosmic experiments, moving through freely associative, cyclical and mindful world-making. The works of art lead to a mutually respectful, tangible and sensible impact on the space and its inhabitants, evenly delegating the power of creation and criticism to both the object and its subject. Object-oriented ontology, Kant's Copernican revolution, the study of abstraction and phenomenology have helped Canty develop the conceptual framework and language for creating this exhibition.
James Canty (b.1994) is a multidisciplinary artist from Ireland. He is currently based in London having graduated from Central Saint Martins with an MA in Fine Art in 2021. He is interested in art that observes signs, colors, shapes and space in experimental and exciting ways. In his works of recent years, Canty focuses on studying the perception and interaction of the world, which has now turned into a free, associative and cyclical journey, combining organic with the inorganic materials, soft with solid, stable with unstable, therefore creating visual language and forms from chaos that affect people tactilely and mentally. In 2021 he took part in the “PUBLIC ENCOUNTERS” project at Art Station Dubulti, and is pleased to return to Riga and present his first show in Europe at DOM Galerija.
